The service
Heat rises, and an under-insulated roof space is the largest single escape route in most houses. Upgrading loft insulation is one of the cheapest ways to reduce heat loss, but it only works properly when the rest of the roof is set up to cope with it, which is exactly why we fit it alongside roofing work rather than treating it as an unrelated product.
The reason is simple. Better insulation makes the loft colder, because less heat leaks into it. A colder loft is more likely to see condensation forming on the underside of the roof unless the ventilation path at the eaves is open and working. Insulation stuffed tight into the eaves blocks that path, and the result is damp timber, wet insulation and mould in a roof that never leaked.
We survey the roof space, check the existing depth and condition, confirm ventilation and eaves detail, deal with any damp already present, and install insulation to a consistent depth with the ventilation path preserved. Where a re-roof, roofline renewal or repair is also happening, it is all handled by the same team on the same visit.

Poor insulation shows up every month on the heating bill, and it never stops. Warm air escapes through the ceiling, the boiler works harder for the same room temperature, and in cold spells the upstairs rooms are the ones nobody wants to sit in.
Damp insulation is worse than none. Wet mineral wool loses most of its performance, holds moisture against joists and ceiling boards, and takes a long time to dry in an unventilated space. If a roof leak, a blocked gutter or condensation has been soaking the loft, adding more insulation on top simply buries the problem.
The subtler risk is condensation caused by getting the sequence wrong. Insulating well while blocking eaves ventilation produces the classic symptoms, black mould on the underside of the roof, damp patches at the ceiling line, water marks that appear in cold weather rather than during rain. Fixing that afterwards costs far more than doing it in the right order once.

In detail
What goes into a loft depends on how the roof is built and how the space is used.
The standard arrangement in most houses across Berkshire and Surrey is insulation laid at ceiling level, between and then across the joists in two layers so the joists themselves do not act as cold bridges. Depth and consistency matter more than product branding: patchy coverage and gaps around the hatch and the perimeter undo a lot of the benefit.
Where a loft has been converted or a flat roof covers a habitable room, insulation moves into or above the roof structure instead of the ceiling. This is a different build-up with different condensation considerations, and it is usually dealt with as part of the roof covering works rather than as a separate insulation job.
Eaves ventilation, ventilated soffits and, where appropriate, ridge ventilation form the airflow route that keeps a cold loft dry. Insulation must stop short of blocking that path. On roofs with older bitumen underlay this is even more important, since the underlay itself is not breathable and relies entirely on ventilation to disperse moisture.
If the loft is used for storage, boarding must be raised above the insulation rather than compressing it, or you lose much of what you paid for. Water tanks and pipework in the loft need insulating themselves once the space runs colder, and recessed lighting and cabling need appropriate clearance.
Domestic loft insulation is the common case. On commercial and outbuilding roofs the insulation strategy is usually part of the roof build-up itself. Either way we survey the roof and the space together, because insulation performance is decided by the whole assembly, not by one layer.

Not always. Sound, dry material can usually be topped up. Wet, mouldy or heavily compacted insulation should be removed rather than covered over.

We fix the roof first. Laying insulation into a loft that is still taking water simply ruins the new material and hides the leak.
