Modern uPVC fascia and soffit board comes in a wide range of colours and finishes, including white, black, anthracite grey, rosewood and oak woodgrain effects. Profile matters as much as colour: square-edge, bullnose and ogee boards each read differently on a property, and matching the style of neighbouring houses keeps a terrace or estate coherent.

Soffits are available solid or vented, and vented board is specified where the roof space needs airflow at the eaves. On some properties over-fascia or eaves ventilators are the better solution, particularly where the soffit is very narrow.

Half-round guttering is the standard on most domestic properties; square-line and deep-flow profiles carry more water and suit larger roof areas or steeper pitches where run-off is fast. Down-pipe sizing, hopper positions and the point of discharge to the gully all affect whether the system copes in a heavy downpour. Cast iron effect uPVC gives period properties the right look without the maintenance of real cast iron.

The underlay at the eaves has to overhang into the gutter. Where old felt has torn or was cut short, water running down the underlay ends up behind the gutter and onto the fascia, a defect that a new fascia alone will not fix. Eaves protection trays and correct dressing of the underlay are part of doing the job properly.

Gables take the worst of driving rain. Bargeboards are renewed in uPVC to match the fascias, and where mortar verges have cracked and blown we can discuss dry verge systems that mechanically fix the edge tiles rather than relying on bedding that will eventually fail again.
